Students are busy learning about simple machines and the lever in grade 2! Some vocabulary they learned is lever, fulcrum, load, force and balance. The concept they were working on was that if they moved the fulcrum they would have to adjust the load to balance the lever. In turn they are learning that the longer the distance from the fulcrum the less force is needed to move the load. In grade three the students are testing out different shapes that will support a bridge! They learned that bridges need some kind of support. They experimented with the arch and triangular supports. Both were pretty helpful in supporting a heavier load! We hope to have time to try making bridges using triangles, rectangles and trusses. Check out this link:
